June 8, 2009:
I have a new addition to the area around my property! |
|
|
Can you see the deer?

|
|
|
I tried to get a little closer and
suddenly the deer disappeared! So I went carefully through the pasture and
can you see what I found?

|
|
|
So I got a little closer. That couldn't
be the deer I saw earlier! It looked much smaller. It was! It was a baby
fawn! But where the heck did Mom disappear to?

|
|
|
Just as I got closer to take this
picture the Mom jumped up from where she had been laying quietly on her
side in the grass just behind the fawn. Dang she startled me! Now that I
look back at the pictures, I can make out her ear(s) just above and to the
right of the fawn.

|
|
|
Since the Mom ran away, trying to get me
to follow her, I took the opportunity to take a closer picture of the
little fawn. It was so small!

|
|
|
It had blue eyes too! I didn't know baby
fawns have blue eyes when they're born. Just after this picture I leaned
forward to let it sniff my hand, which it did. Then I wanted to try to
take a picture of it's face, to get a picture of it's eyes more clearly,
and I gently touched its' head. Wow! What a mistake! It let out the
loudest bleat I've ever heard, jumped up and ran a few yards away, fell,
then jumped up and ran farther away. I didn't follow it, of course. I
wanted more pictures of it, and probably could have caught up to it, but I
didn't want to terrorize it any more. Poor thing. I shouldn't have tried
to touch it!
Perhaps it will be around on another
occasion when I have my telephoto lens on my camera and can observe from a
farther distance.
That mother deer was amazing. She'd lain
almost completely down on her side and not moved a muscle until I got
within five feet of her. Plus I was so concentrated on the fawn that I
didn't see her! Thank goodness she's a herbivore or I'd have been
breakfast! |

The current
"parking area". That camper belongs to Tim and will be removed
in the Spring.

Heading out of the parking area. |
Looking left. |

Looking toward the top of the hill. |
View from the top of the hill, down toward the
parking area. Note "Old Man Tree" in the center. |

Going up the hill on the right hand side of the
property. The property extends further into the trees to the right. |
Heading toward the back right corner. |
|
|
The old Ford tractor that came with the property. |
The cutter that came with the tractor too. |
|
|
Looking back from middle of the top of the hill. |
Another view, looking back, from closer to the
right back corner of the property. |
|
|
Looking from right to left at the top of the hill
at the back of the property. |
Getting over the crest of the hill toward the
middle of the back of the property, still looking left. |
|
|
Starting into the first bunch of trees along the
back property line, looking back toward the right corner of the property. |
Looking toward the middle of the property. |

The small stocked pond near the left back corner
of the property. |
Standing in front of the pond looking toward the
middle of the property. |

Heading up the hill by the pond toward the left
back corner of the property. |
At the top of the hill looking toward the middle
of the property. |

Looking toward middle of the back property line
from over the pond. |
Another view from over the pond toward the middle
of the property. |

Heading up the hill toward the left hand side of
the property line. |
Left hand property line at the top of the hill.
From here you could follow the hillcrest through the trees and back around
to just below the parking area.. |
|
|
Heading back the way I came. Pond is just over
the near hill. In the distance you can see the corn crop at the top of the
hill. That lovely green pasture is not mine. It belongs to my neighbors. |
Slightly more left from the top of the hill near
the left corner of the property. |
|
|
Heading back around toward the parking area. |
Still curving around; making a big loop from
where we started out. |
|
|
This is a cut path between the corn field and
where the pond is, looking toward back property line. |
The area of land that I hope to turn into a big
pond. As you come in the driveway, it's to the right, through the trees. |
|
|
Coming through the trees toward the top of the
hill; paralleling the driveway. |
That deerstand stays. Don't know what I'll do
with it. |
